“The Mayarashi June won’t be re-entering orbit,” Captain Ellery said, tugging her uniform jacket back into place as she stepped off the teleporter pad.
The teleport team looked at each other, and decided it was best not to comment on her dishevelled hair, or the fact that she was missing one boot.
“Madam,” one of them ventured, “What shall we enter in the log?”
She gave him a hard look. “I hope that you’ll be entering the fact that you’ve successfully teleported my crew to safety.”
“Y-yes ma’am,” he said quickly. “But the cause? Pending your full report of course.”
She rolled her eyes. “We picked up a Helligan Leech somewhere around Gerruba Five,” she said. “Nasty parasite. The eggs were just about to hatch.”
The teleport team looked at each other again. Helligan Leeches were the Fleet’s prime example of a worst case scenario. No captain had ever walked away from one with their full crew before.
One of them could not resist the question. “What did you do, ma’am?”
She smiled. Captain Ellery – for the first time anybody could recall – smiled. “Well, luckily we were carrying an adequate amount of high explosive,” she said.
The team were left in silence as she hobbled with strange dignity out of the teleport centre.
