“I’m sorry,” she said. “This… entanglement of ours. It has to end.”
He frowned. “Entanglement? That’s what you want to call it?”
She put her hand gently on his cheek. It was cold. Her hand was always cold.
“You know it can’t work,” she said.
“But I love you,” he said, reaching out to her. “How can you be so heartless?!”
She pulled away. “How can I be anything else? I am Death. I cannot love you. All I can say is… this is not goodbye.”
He fell to his knees as she left, and although his heart ached he was alive, and he knew that he would see her again.
