Everyone expected a lavish affair, and all knew that Lady de Martreveille could be relied upon to deliver. They all arrived promptly, and gathered in the elegant foyer, whispering to each other in hushed anticipation. There were no decorations here, but they knew, from years past, that the Great Hall would be a sight to behold.
At the stroke of eight, their gracious hostess appeared. She was dressed formally in a deep red gown that accentuated her pale white skin and raven black hair beautifully.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” she said, her accent painting the words with a kind of foreign glamour, “I bid you all welcome to my home.”
The doors to the great hall were thrown open and the guests burst into applause. Lady de Martreveille had outdone herself once again, they exclaimed, gazing in wonder at the ornaments and decorations that festooned the hall, and the feast that was already spread out across the grand table.
“My dear,” Lord Avery said, pausing just inside the doorway to admire the offering on display, “You really have gone to abnormal lengths this year. This is all quite, quite splendid!”
His hostess smiled and took his arm. “Why, you do flatter me,” she said. “Now, Lord Avery, I would be quite honoured if you would make the first choice, and dine at my side tonight?”
Lord Avery smiled and bowed. “The honour is all mine,” he said.
She guided him into the hall and towards the most select dishes on offer.
“Hmm,” the Lord said, stroking his beard with carefully manicured fingers. “It is a difficult choice, when everything looks quite so delicious, but I think this one.”
He stopped in front of a buxom red haired maiden and pulled on the chains that bound her, dragging her up to dangle painfully above the table, her full weight hanging from her wrists. She whimpered as the two nobles looked at her and licked their lips. With a nod, Lady de Martreveille accepted Lord Avery’s suggestion, and the feast of the vampires began.
