She had stared at spreadsheets all day, until she felt as if her brains might just melt out of her ears. It was mind numbing, frustrating work that seemed to have no end. She had taken to keeping a tally of what she had done, just so that she could see that she was getting somewhere.
The weather wasn’t helping, either. It was unseasonably warm, and the office had no air conditioning. As the heat rose, her energy inexorably sank. By the time five o’clock rolled around, all she wanted to do was lie down and do nothing for a while.
She dozed off on the bus, which at least made the journey quicker. Once home, she pulled off her boots and socks and sighed as the cool tiles of the dining room floor soothed her hot, tired feet.
After a day like today, she thought to herself, you deserve a treat. Something to cleanse the soul.
She was pretty sure her soul wasn’t in her liver, so she went into the kitchen and poured a big glass of wine from the bottle she’d put in the fridge the night before. Now that’s time management, she thought. And not a spreadsheet in sight.
She wandered into the sitting room and stretched out on the sofa. With a meow, her kitten crept out from behind the sofa and leapt up to join her. As she scratched him behind the ears, he purred, stretched, and started to knead the cushion with his paws.
What is best in life, she thought. Wine and a warm kitten. That’ll do.
